Workshop Information

This workshop explores embodied reflexivity and the therapist’s use of self in Ketamine-Assisted Couple Therapy (Couple KAP), offering systemic reflections on lived experience as a clinical resource.

Drawing from systemic, attachment-based, and somatic frameworks (including EFT, IFS/IFIO, and neuroscience-informed practice), the workshop situates Couple KAP not as a replacement for established models, but as a treatment amplifier—a context in which familiar therapeutic processes deepen. Ketamine is associated with increased neuroplasticity and changes in brain connectivity, supporting greater cognitive flexibility, emotional openness, and somatic awareness. These shifts reduce defensiveness and avoidance, increase tolerance of difficult affect, and support couples in accessing vulnerability, enhancing empathy and therefore loosening rigid relational cycles, and expanding capacity for intimacy.

Specific contraindications will also be highlighted as well as practicalities around this treatment , such as collaboration with a medical prescriber - as part of necessary medical and risk assessment protocol.

Some wider context , in terms of cultural and political global shifts accelerating interest and research  (and in some countries clinical access ) in these treatments will be mentioned .

Alongside the clinical, medical and wider context framing,  the workshop invites reflexive engagement with the therapist’s use of self. The presenter will draw, with care and ethical consideration, on personal lived experience of healing from relational disconnection and long-standing depression into greater embodied connection through psychedelic-assisted therapy—not as testimony, but as a lens through which to explore how embodied knowing, nervous system regulation, and relational presence inform therapeutic practice.

It will be proposed that within Couple KAP, the therapist’s use of self becomes of key significance.

The therapist’s embodied presence, capacity for regulation, relational attunement, and ability to remain emotionally engaged while grounded become central to the therapeutic container. In altered states—where attachment wounds, preverbal material, vulnerable affect, attachment dynamics and transference become amplified—the therapist’s presence plays a key role in co-regulating the relational field, supporting new experiences of safety, connection, and emotional integration.

Participants will be invited into a participatory space that includes:

  • Gentle guided reflection on how their own attachment histories and lived experiences may shape their therapeutic presence

  • Experiential exploration of co-regulation, embodiment, and the therapist’s nervous system as a clinical resource

  • Small-group dialogue on ethical considerations, power, and responsibility when working with amplified vulnerability, suggestibility and attachment dynamics

  • Clinical case reflections linking psychedelic-assisted work with systemic concepts

The workshop also attends to recursiveness: how therapists’ experiences shape practice, how therapeutic encounters reshape us, and how emerging approaches invite us to reconsider what becomes possible in relational healing.

Participants will leave with:

  • A systemic understanding of ketamine as a treatment amplifier within evidence-based couple therapy

  • Increased awareness of their embodied use of self in practice

  • Reflections on integrating lived experience ethically and responsibly

  • Expanded perspectives on supporting relational change where traditional approaches alone may not be sufficient
