Billowing Boundaries - negotiating meaningful relationships with clients beyond the therapy room

Workshop Description

Bring your thoughts, experiences and willingness to challenge dominant ideas to this participative workshop about boundaries. We are hosting a conversation about the boundaries we place around our relationships with clients outside the therapy room, both during and after the ending of the therapy relationship.

What informs how boundaries are fixed and by whom?  What scope is there for negotiating what is and isn’t possible and who gets to participate in the negotiation? How do we approach these questions in contexts where the total separation that is usually privileged is impossible or undesirable - small communities, situations of collective trauma perhaps, or when working with communities who have different traditions of connecting with professionals.

We are systemic therapists who have worked in various locations from big cities to small islands, and with a variety of client groups, where ideas about clear, easy boundaries have sometimes felt inadequate. Yet we found few spaces for exploring this phenomenon more deeply.

Scotland, where the size of places and populations may make fluid boundaries a relatively common experience, seems like a good place to open up a discussion. Whatever your work context, come and join us for an open exploration.
