Workshop Session B (Day 1 - 16:00)

Expanding the application of Systemic Sex Therapy with the Global Majority
Dr Anthony Pennant

This workshop will explore the application of Systemic Sex Therapy within individuals and intimate relationships who identify as the global majority. Traditional sex therapy frameworks and training often center Western, Eurocentric norms, negating the impact of the intersection of cultural values, systemic oppression, and diverse understandings of sexuality and intimacy. This session will equip therapists with the tools to provide culturally attuned sex therapy, incorporating systemic principles that honor the realities of diverse peoples.
Additionally, this workshop will emphasize the Person of the Therapist (POTT) model as a critical tool for clinicians to examine and manage their biases while also utilizing themselves as a powerful intervention. By engaging in self-reflection and self-awareness, therapists will develop strategies for accountability and responsibility in their clinical work. Participants will learn how their own social locations, values, and experiences impact therapeutic interventions, ensuring an ethical and equity-driven practice.
